Storm Amy Hits the Coast

The wind was relentless, whipping across the coast and stirring the sea into a frenzy. Storm Amy had arrived. With a free day and high winds to match, I couldn’t resist heading out to capture the waves in action. Newhaven, here I come.

From the moment I parked at the harbour, the car rocked in the gusts, and opening the door took both hands. I knew I was in for a show — and the waves did not disappoint.

Positioning myself on the beach, I had to get low to the ground — standing up meant the wind was pushing me around. With the 400mm lens on the camera, getting a steady burst of photos of the waves crashing into the harbour wall was tricky. Lowering the tripod to its minimum height helped immensely.

After shooting at different focal lengths, I glanced behind me at the cliffs. “What are those people doing up there?” One quick snap later, and zooming in on the photo, I saw they were also photographing the waves. A higher vantage point would give a better, more separated view of the harbour wall and lighthouse, I thought — so I headed up to join them. Why hadn’t I thought of this the other times I have visited here? The view was fantastic, and I was partially shielded from the relentless wind. Win-win!

Below are my selected shots from over 900 photos. Enjoy.
